WHat They’re saying about Discover…Mission
Rev. David Newhouse, retired elder, MI conference
“Over the years I have found that Discover . . . Mission has served as a critical spiritual formation and leadership development ministry. The intentionality of Discover . . . Mission takes young adults deeper into their spiritual underpinnings while expanding their experience and interaction with “otherness,” whether international or domestic. For some this is their awakening experience in their faith journey. For others it is a time of maturing and embracing their gifts and graces. Discover . . . Mission works differently from many mission programs in making a clear distinction between going on a vacation trip with a bit of missional activity thrown in and preparing and entering a mission setting with the primary goal of interaction and being in mission and ministry with others as full partners, guided by the needs and capacities of the host mission site.”

“When I joined my middle school youth group, I was eager for the opportunity to participate in the high school mission journey. I immersed myself in every service opportunity available throughout middle school, high school, and into college, driven by a deep passion for missions. The chance to travel to a place where both of my parents had been before me was incredibly meaningful, and it was even more impactful to do so alongside peers who shared the same heart for service. Meeting young adults in Senegal who were equally committed to living out the United Methodist mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world was a profound experience. On the "Discover Mission" Journey, I learned valuable lessons about leadership and the power of presence through listening. One of the most memorable aspects was experiencing the universal language of music, which deepened my appreciation for its ability to connect us across cultures. Our worship experiences were extremely meaningful. It has also been amazing to keep some of the connections that we made. This journey played a crucial role in shaping my call to ministry, instilling in me a desire to be out in the world, sharing Jesus' love with others. Little did I know then that this experience would also influence my decision to serve in my current role with the Indiana Conference.”
