Disaster Response

Following a disaster, volunteers should wait to respond until they are invited into the affected area.

We encourage churches to participate in creating UMCOR kits that are needed following disasters.  Click here for more information.  Do not send items that have not been requested by the affected area.

Those who have been trained and credentialed may be asked to be part of Early Response Teams (ERT). Contact your annual conference disaster or UMVIM Disaster Response  Coordinator about training.  ERT training is available through Annual Conferences in partnership with United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR).

Long-term disaster recovery teams do not have to be credentialed. Click here for a list of areas still in need for disaster recover teams.

Disaster Response Scholarship:

In times of natural disasters, United Methodist Volunteers in Mission teams are among the first to respond to the crisis and among the last to leave. We are happy to announce that through the generosity of a family who once received UMVIM Disaster Response Teams, we are currently able to provide scholarships to teams serving in areas affected by disasters.

The funds from this scholarship will cover registration and insurance for Early Response and Recovery Teams working in the affected disaster area.

Criteria for Disaster Response Scholarship:
1. Teams must have a trained team leader
2. Teams must register/insure through the UMVIM SEJ office
3. Churches/team leaders may only receive 1 scholarship award annually
4. Team leader must complete the application

To apply, please fill out this document and return to our office.

To support the Disaster Response Scholarship Fund, you may donate online (please designate that the gift is for “Disaster Scholarship”) or contact our office for more information.
