“I recently went on a VIM trip to Guatemala. Although I know that mission experiences change lives and hearts, I was still struck by the effect that the trip had on those who were on their first VIM trip.  As one person said, “You can see images on television all day long without those images changing you.  Being here has changed how I see the world, and how I understand Jesus’ call on my life.”  Because of VIM, she discovered that God was calling her away from a lifestyle of American consumerism to a life of discipleship in which she loves others with her prayers, her presence, her gifts, her witness, and her service.
 
As I have reflected on the impact that this trip had on her life, I am reminded of John Wesley’s observation,
 
One great reason why the rich, in general, have so little sympathy for the poor, is, because they so seldom visit them. Hence it is, that, according to the common observation, one part of the world does not know what the other suffers.
