Advent Blessings

Ordinary People

There is a light in this world, a healing spirit more powerful than darkness we may encounter.  We sometimes lose sight of this force when there is suffering, too much pain. Then suddenly, the spirit will emerge through the lives or ordinary people who hear a call and answer in extraordinary ways.
-      Mother Teresa

From the beginning of this movement known as United Methodist Volunteers in Mission (UMVIM), ordinary people have answered God’s call to go and serve.  Yes those called in 1976 were smaller in numbers, around 50 teams, some 500 volunteers serving in the southeast United States and some in other countries.  Now there are over 100,000 volunteers serving through United Methodist Volunteers in Mission and some of the volunteers are from other countries coming to the United States.

“As nationals took over the leadership of their churches in other countries, they began to invite volunteers to come for short periods to share their skills and expertise.  Volunteers, in turn, found great satisfaction in these one-on-one experiences that enriched heir lives and strengthened their faith.  Such mutuality in mission has been at the core of the volunteer movement.”1

During Advent, as I reflect on the significance of the birth of Christ and light the Advent Candles, I reflect on how UMVIM has become part of the embodiment of what Advent means:

  • Hope – Providing hope to a hurting and broken world through volunteer service
  • Peace – Encouraging mutual respect through dialogue and listening
  • Joy – Sharing the joy of Christ through gifts and talents
  • Love – Transforming the world through Christian love in action

Thank you for the support that you have provided UMVIM SEJ.  As we transition to a new location and new staff, we encourage you to continue to share in this ministry by giving of your time and gifts and to please consider making a donation.

As you continue to answer God’s call to serve, UMVIM SEJ exists to inspire change in the world; toinform, connect and equip volunteers; and to interact as servants of Christ.  Let us help you get there.

Advent Blessings and a Joyful New Year!
